Poland’s Green Revolution: Facts and Future of Renewable Energy

As everyone knows, as a country, we have been trying to change our primary energy source for many years now. Mainly Poland relies on coal, but year by year the situation is changing in favour of green sources.

Who Rules Poland’s Green Energy Landscape?

If we look at the energy map of Polish renewable sources, the situation is clear: solar energy is the absolute king of the green energy sources in our country. Photovoltaics account for over 60% of all renewable energy capacity and the fun fact is that you can easily see it on rooftops every day. So, which source comes next in the competition? Onshore wind farms hold that position, bringing in more than one-fourth of our clean power capacity. The rest of the energy mix consists of smaller but still important resources like biomass and hydropower. There is a huge game-changer on the horizon too: in a few years, massive offshore wind farms on the Baltic Sea will join the contest, giving our whole energy system a powerful boost!

Some of „green flags” of success

According to official data, at the end of the last year, over 50% of Poland’s total power capacity came from renewable energy sources. This is a massive breakthrough! What is more important, green energy produced around 31.4% of our total electricity. What does it exactly mean? It means that nearly one-third of the power in your home sockets is completely green. The biggest impact is visible of course thanks to solar energy. Since 2020 the photovoltaic power jumped from 4 GW to over 24 GW today. Which means that if we take a look back at the Polish rooftoops, solars are on almost every second one of them.

What about plans for the future?

They are even more ambitious. The official goal is to produce over 50% of electricity  from renewable energy sources by 2030. Futhermore, in the next 15 years, the goal is to reach 80% of power from RES.  The energy transition is happening right now, and as future technicians, we will be the ones maintaining this modern system.
