Grandmother’s and Grandfather’s Day

Grandparents’ Day and Grandparents’ Day are very much a family holiday. In Poland, they are celebrated on January 21st – Grandmother’s Day – and January 22nd – Grandfather’s Day. On these days, grandchildren have the opportunity to thank their grandparents for their care, protection, and fun times together. In preschools and schools, younger children prepare a performance dedicated to their grandparents. They sing many songs, recite poems, and at the end, give their grandparents gifts.

Grandparents’ Day celebrations began in the 1960s. In 1964, the idea was proposed by the weekly magazine „Kobieta i Życie.” A year later, the day was celebrated for the first time in Poznań, where actress Mieczysława Ćwiklińska performed, playing the role of the grandmother, and celebrated her 85th birthday. The idea was quickly picked up by other media outlets, and the holiday spread throughout Poland.

Grandfather’s Day appeared later, more precisely in the 1970s. Various dates were tried to be set for this holiday, but ultimately it was accepted that it is celebrated the day after Grandmother’s Day, i.e. on January 22. Over time, the holiday became popular throughout the country.
