🐣 Where did this holiday come from?
Easter is the most important holiday in Christianity, celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Its roots go back to the Jewish holiday of Passover (Pesach), which commemorates the Israelites’ liberation from Egyptian slavery. According to the New Testament, Jesus was crucified during Passover and rose from the dead three days later. Therefore, Christians celebrate Easter as a triumph of life over death and as the redemption of humanity’s sins.
🐣 When is Easter celebrated?
Easter is a movable feast, meaning its date changes each year. It falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring, which means it can occur between March 22 and April 25. In 2024, Easter was celebrated on March 31. In 2025 Easter will be celebrated on April 20.

🐣 What is Easter about?
Easter symbolizes the victory of life over death and is a time of joy and spiritual renewal. It is preceded by Lent, a 40-day period of fasting and reflection, which ends with Holy Week:
- Maundy Thursday – commemorates the Last Supper.
- Good Friday – the day of Jesus’ crucifixion and death.
- Holy Saturday – a day of silence and waiting, with the tradition of blessing Easter food.
- Easter Sunday – the celebration of Jesus’ Resurrection, often beginning with an early morning mass.
In Poland, Easter traditions include blessing food in a basket, painting Easter eggs (pisanki), Easter breakfast with dishes like sour rye soup, white sausage, and Mazurek (cake), and Easter Monday (Śmigus-Dyngus), a playful water-splashing tradition.
🐣 Is Easter celebrated in other countries?
Yes, Easter is celebrated worldwide, but traditions vary by country:
- USA & UK – popular traditions include Easter egg hunts and the Easter Bunny.
- Spain – grand religious processions, especially in Andalusia.
- Germany – decorating trees with Easter eggs and lighting Easter bonfires.
- Greece – people crack red eggs as a symbol of victory over death.
Easter is celebrated by both Catholics and Orthodox Christians (though on different dates due to the Julian calendar). In countries with little Christian influence (such as China or Japan), Easter is not widely observed.
