“The Walking Dead” – More Than Just a Zombie Story
Imagine that you wake up in a hospital. The hallways are empty, the lights are blinking, and behind the door, there is nothing to be heard but silence. You step outside and discover that the world you knew no longer exists. People have disappeared, the city is deserted, and the streets are filled with wrecked cars and the walking dead. This is how the story of Rick Grimes begins – one of the most iconic series of the 21st century.
Many people only know this story from the TV series, but it actually debuted in 2003 with the release of the first graphic novel by Robert Kirkman. Over the years, “The Walking Dead” universe has expanded, leading to the creation of popular games that allowed players to make difficult decisions that influenced the characters’ future. The combination of comics, TV series, and games has made “The Walking Dead” more than just a simple zombie story.
From black-and-white pages to a global phenomenon
In fact, the story actually began in 2003, when Robert Kirkman, along with artists Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard, created the comic book “The Walking Dead.” From the very beginning, the series stood out from other zombie stories. It didn’t focus only on fighting, but above all on people trying to survive in a new reality. The main character – Rick Grimes – a sheriff who wakes up from a coma in a world dominated by the living dead, starts out looking for his family. But as the series goes on, we watch him transform from a rules-following guy into a cold-hearted leader who’ll do whatever it takes for his group.

In 2010, the story made its way to television screens thanks to an AMC television. The show quickly gained millions of fans around the world, and characters such as Daryl Dixon, Negan Smith, and Rosita Espinosa became icons of modern television.
Games that have stolen the hearts of many players
The universe of “The Walking Dead” has finally made its way into the world of video games as well. The most successful series is the adventure game series created by Telltale Games. Instead of focusing on shooting and killing zombies, the creators decided to focus on emotions and difficult moral choices that were meant to be challenging and painful for players.
In the first part of the game, players played as Lee Everett, who meets a girl named Clementine during the apocalypse. The bond between them became one of the most touching storylines in the history of video games. Every decision had consequences, and some choices are still remembered by fans today as some of the hardest and most painful in gaming.
Over the years, the game series has expanded. Currently, four main story episodes are available: “The Walking Dead: Season 1,” “The Walking Dead: Season 2,” “The Walking Dead: A New Frontier” (Season 3), and “The Walking Dead: The Final Season” (Season 4), as well as two spin-off episodes: “The Walking Dead: Michonne” and “The Walking Dead: 400 Days.”
Why has “The Walking Dead” become a global phenomenon?
The secret to this series’ success lies not only in the zombie-filled world it has created. In reality, the living dead serve only as a background for stories about people, their choices and decisions, their fear, hope, and struggle for survival. This story shows just how thin the line is between hero and villain, and how far a person is able to go to protect their family.
My opinion
The TV series “The Walking Dead” made a huge impression on me. I watched it a few years ago, and it made me feel a whole range of emotions – from fear and excitement to joy, and even deep sadness over the loss of some of the characters. It’s a show that can move you, surprise you, and keep you on the edge of your seat for a long time.
Although the series spans 11 seasons, the action unfolds very dynamically right from the first episode. Each season brings something new to the story and makes it hard to tear yourself away from the screen. I’m similarly positive about the games set in this universe. Thanks to an interesting plot and the ability to make your own decisions, players can become even more deeply involved in the characters’ stories.
“The Walking Dead” isn’t just a story about zombies. Above all, it’s a story about humanity, friendship, family, and the struggle to survive in a world where almost everything has been lost. That’s why this story stays with viewers for a long time, and in my opinion, it deserves to be called one of the best post-apocalyptic productions.
