Have you ever heard of Fat Thursday? In Poland, it’s one of the tastiest and most fun-filled days of the year! It always falls on the last Thursday before Lent, which is a period of fasting leading up to Easter. On this day, people eat as many sweet treats as they can, especially pączki (Polish donuts) and faworki (crispy pastries).

The most popular treat is pączki — Polish donuts. They are soft, round, and filled with jam, chocolate, or custard. They are deep-fried and covered with sugar or glaze. Another popular snack is faworki, also known as angel wings. They are light, crispy, and sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Why do people eat so many sweets on Fat Thursday? Long ago, it was the last chance to enjoy rich and fatty foods and people wanted to use up all the butter, sugar, and eggs before Lent started. Today, it’s more of a fun tradition — everyone buys or makes pączki, and bakeries are full of long lines! Some people even challenge themselves to eat as many Polish donuts as possible in one day.

If you ever visit Poland on Fat Thursday, don’t miss the chance to try a fresh, warm pączek. It’s the sweetest Polish tradition!
