Father’s Day in Poland and around the world: traditions and celebration ideas
Father’s Day is an important holiday when children – both young and old – show their gratitude to their fathers. You don’t need expensive gifts for this; small gestures of appreciation and love that show your dad that you are thinking of him are enough. After all, the most valuable gift for Father’s Day is time spent together.
When do we celebrete Father’s Day?
Father’s Day in Poland is celebrated on June 23rd. The first Father’s Day in our country was held in 1965. Still, admittedly, it does not match the popularity of Mom’s Day, but every year more and more children appreciate their fathers and want to express it with small gestures and gifts.
Father’s Day in the world: history and dates.
However, some countries have their own original customs related to Father’s Day.
– In Korea, wishes are not given only for fathers, but also to the elderly on Parents’ Day. According to the tradition, red carnations are given. In the event that one or both parents are deceased, the symbol turns pink or white sequentially.
– In the Netherlands, fathers get breakfast in bed from their children, and in the evening they go with their children to visit their fathers.
– In China, Father’s Day is celebrated on August 8 because the double eight ” ba-ba” sounds similar to ” dad.”
– In Australia, to celebrate Father’s Day, there is a nationwide competition for the Best Father of the Year.
– In Romania, Father’s Day is a public holiday. It is the only country in the European Union that recognizes Father’s Day as a public holiday.
The tradition of celebrating Father’s Day originated in the United States. It was started by Sonora Smart Dodd, who, during a memorial service for her late mother, realized that her dad had raised her and her five siblings on his own. Knowing about the previously established Mother’s Day tradition, she decided to initiate a Father’s Day celebration in Washington State, where she lived. State authorities agreed to her proposal and the first Father’s Day was held on June 19, 1910. However, it took a few nice years for Father’s Day to be established as a holiday in all states. It happened only in 1972. Thus, both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day derive their tradition from the United States.
