Fallen Past

Every land has its own history. Over time, history fades into oblivion or turns into a legend because it seems unlikely to be a fact from the past.

When I was a child, I often asked my father why everything was changing so much, why was there no stability in the world and its history? I heard the same answer every time. “Our ancestors believed that our world is full of wonders, magic and creatures that we cannot imagine. Maybe it’s better that the world of our ancestors took care of itself. Who knows, maybe we weren’t and still aren’t ready to see it.”

What did time have that it decided to hide from us? What were our eyes not supposed to see and was it something we should fear?

All my life I have been looking for what was forgotten, learning the legends of every land and sea. And the more I delved into these stories, the more I began to notice. I came across a mention of the Fallen Past, a time in which ironically the greatest power lived.

I realized that what I was looking for would not be found in books or the stories of old people. What was forgotten by people never left the walls of the oldest temples of time – the mountains.

There I not only found a part of those times, but also heard and felt it. The power I had read about was nothing compared to what I discovered. It wasn’t time that decided to hide it, it was them. They were here all the time and watched over people, knowing that if they revealed themselves, they would destroy human existence. So they stayed hidden and watched our lives. I was surprised why they allowed me to see them and learn about some of their wonders, but being able to call them my friends and they treated me as such as well, it dispelled all my insecurities. Knowledge attracts knowledge, and they and I had a lot of it.

After meeting them, I had two options. First, tell humanity about the Fallen Guardians, as they called themselves, because in exchange for protecting the human world they gave up what they loved most, their great, strong wings. Second, to keep their existence a secret and live with the knowledge that I will never see them again.

I chose the second option. They sacrificed their wings, I sacrificed my life’s purpose, which was to remind humanity of magic and miracles.

When I climbed the highest mountain for the last time at the end of my life, I saw a beautiful sunset and I swore I saw them again. Perhaps the setting sun was warmed by their fiery roars? Maybe the twilight covering the sky was the shadow of one of them’s wings? And who knows, maybe with my departure a new world was born? And what am I talking about? The world is born anew every day, but we cannot always see the beautiful beasts that protect it.
