Easter in Poland

Hello everyone!

We would like to introduce you to the Polish customs during the Easter holidays. Easter is a holiday that commemorates the last days of Jesus Christ’s life. In the Christian tradition, the Holy Week is celebrated, in which the most important days are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, called the Paschal Triduum.

On Saturday we prepare food and go to the church to have it blessed. Next, there is Resurrection, which is the day of Jesus Christ being risen from dead, most often celebrated at dawn (often at 6 am).  In the past, until the eighteenth century, the resurrection mass was held at midnight. After the mass, it’s time for Easter breakfast. Easter breakfast should include eggs, cold cut, sausages, ham, muffins, Polish cakes „mazurek” and „makowiec” salt and pepper. We also change the decor of our home for Easter by adding decorations in the shape of bunnies, chicks, or we put plastic eggs on twigs. We don’t know about you but we really like the tradition of eating Easter breakfast and changing the decor of our rooms.

Easter Monday is also known as Wet Monday and we call it in Polish „śmigus-dyngus”. In Poland, it is the day when we pour water on each other.
