12 Ukrainian Dishes for Christmas 

Hello, dear readers! Today I would like to invite you on a culinary journey through Ukraine to discover 12 traditional dishes that grace the festive table at Christmas. Each of these dishes is not only delicious, but also full of deep traditions that reflect the rich culture of Ukraine.  

 

1. Kutya: This is a sweet and important part of Ukrainian Christmas. It consists of boiled wheat, poppy seeds, honey, nuts and dried fruit, symbolising hope and abundance.

2. Uzvar: A traditional Christmas drink made from dried fruits such as plums, apples and pears. Uzvar is not only delicious but is also considered healthy, full of natural sweetness and flavours.

3. Varenyky: An integral part of Ukrainian holidays, made with different fillings: cherries, potatoes or cabbage. Each varenyk is a small work of art, lovingly made and boiled.

4. Pickled Mushrooms: Served as an appetiser or side dish.

5. Fried Fish or Fish in Tomato Juice: Fish is an important element of the Ukrainian Christmas table, often served fried or in a rich tomato sauce.

6. Kholodets: This is a unique dish that has a special place in the culinary heritage of many countries, including Ukraine. It is a cold appetiser made from meat broth that solidifies to a jelly-like state. Kholodets is cooked slowly so that the meat, usually pork or beef, gives its rich flavour to the broth.

7. Pickles: Sauerkraut, pickled tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers, which bring flavour and aroma to the Ukrainian table. These snacks are ideal for a festive treat, adding variety to every meal.

8. Pancakes with Potatoes and Mushrooms: A combination of creamy potatoes and flavourful mushrooms in a tender pancake.

9. Pickled Herring: A classic Ukrainian snack that combines the salty flavours of the sea with a hint of vinegar and spices.
